SUMMARY:EGU 2021: Co-Adapt virtual PICO presentations
DESCRIPTION:Also this year\, the Open University is represented at the annual meeting of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). Master’s student Ermy Brok and PhD researcher Borjana Bogatinoska\, both affiliated with the Environmental Sciences department of the Faculty of Science\, have been selected to present their research projects on April 26 and 27\, 2021 during the largest earth science conference in Europe. Just like last year\, due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the event will take place completely online\, from April 15 to 30. \nMore than 16\,000 researchers from all over the world attend the conference every year\, more than half of whom are young scientists. In this way\, the EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in the earth sciences. Normally\, the event takes place in Vienna\, but for the second year\, the earth scientists have taken the lead in a large-scale virtual conference. \nBogatinoska and Brok present their research work in two scientific sessions. Master’s student Ermy Brok took the question ‘how important is scale’ in the search for natural climate solutions for experienced policymakers as the starting point for her research project. Collaborating organizations in adaptive water management often operate on a regional and local scale in their quest for climate resilience in stream catchment areas. The knowledge about the effects of climate change on which they are based is based on a global scale. Brok has investigated this field of tension based on the concept of ‘dynamic proximity’ derived from hi-tech innovation. \nIn her PhD research\, Borjana Bogatinoska maps out the challenges and opportunities faced by water professionals in the search for natural solutions. She focuses on the use of newly developed instruments that can support water professionals and stakeholders in the joint design of solutions (‘co-creation’). Bogatinoska is investigating in the eight river basins within the Co-Adapt project to what extent these new instruments support this process of co-creation\, and under what conditions. \nThose interested can apply to attend the EGU General Assembly. During the earth science conference\, PICO (Problem\, Intervention\, Comparison\, Outcome) sessions will be used\, in which speakers pitch their research in 2 minutes.
